"Carefully, you trail your hand along the table and find your salad, your dishes, your cutlery, your glassware. You turn your face to the left and ask, "is anyone there?", and then you make your introduction, wondering if your voice is loud enough to be heard over the lively chatter coming from unseen people sitting in a room that seems so vast. You feel the prongs of your fork and learn how to spear what you can't see. As each course arrives, you attempt to identify each one with your nose, then your fingers and finally with your tongue... ". Dining in the Dark is an all new dinner/dance fundraiser being held by Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, in support of services for visually impaired and blind babies and children. This event is the first one of its kind ever to be held in Hernando County. Date: To Be Announced Why are Proceeds Going to our Kids Programs? The early years of a child's life are the most important years for learning and for meeting developmental milestones. These years are the foundation from which important life skills are formed, such as independence, resourcefulness, motivation and communication, all affecting a person's overall well-being and their future outcome. Babies with visual impairments often need specialized early intervention to ensure their early milestones are met and to increase their sensory abilities. Children also need specialized services as their abilities change, as they become mainstreamed into classrooms and activities, and as they experience the challenges of growing up. The Lighthouse recognizes and supports the needs of these babies and children with our Early Intervention and other Children's programs. Unfortunately, Lighthouse receives limited funding to provide these services and due to the economic downturn, donations and grants have slowed or are becoming very difficult to obtain. Therefore the need for your support of visually impaired and blind babies and children is more urgent than ever before. Would you like to help ensure children who are visually impaired and blind have the skills they need to survive and thrive? The proceeds from Dining in the Dark are designated to support babies and children with these life-changing programs. Seat Prices Seats are $100 each. Tables of 10 seats each are $1,000. Discounts are available for Lighthouse clients and for Armed Service, Law Enforcement and Firefighter personnel in dress uniform.
